Nigerian Brothers Extradited To US In Unprecedented Move Following Sexual Extortion Scheme Linked To Teen’s Suicide

In an unusual development, two Nigerian men have been extradited to the United States over the weekend after being charged in connection with a sexual extortion scheme that authorities believe led to the tragic suicide of a 17-year-old teenager from Michigan last year.

Hailing from Lagos, the Ogoshi brothers, aged 22 and 20, were flown to the US on Sunday and appeared in federal court in Grand Rapids on Monday afternoon, as stated by the Justice Department.

The indictment against the Ogoshis encompasses four counts, including charges of sexual exploitation of minors and being responsible for the death of Jordan DeMay, a high school student.

The 17-year-old took his own life in March 2022 after the Ogoshi brothers allegedly coerced him into sending explicit photographs, subsequently using them to blackmail him for money. Their threats included sharing the images with his family and friends.

If convicted, Samuel could face a minimum prison sentence of 30 years, while Samson could face a minimum of five years.

Last year, the FBI issued a public safety alert addressing the growing concern of “sextortion” schemes targeting thousands of teenagers, particularly young males, many of which originate from outside the United States.

West Africa has been identified as a region harboring cybercriminals who prey on American citizens.

However, historically, US officials have encountered difficulties in obtaining law enforcement cooperation from these nations to effect arrests.

Earlier this year, FBI agents from Michigan collaborated with Nigerian law enforcement officials to conduct an investigation. This cooperative effort led to a provisional arrest request, aiming to secure the extradition of the Ogoshi brothers and a third defendant, Ezekiel Robert, whose extradition process is currently pending.
