Nigerian Farmers Reveal Cost Of Importing Rice From India

He emphasized that using foreign exchange to import rice is not economically viable, especially considering the competitive pricing of rice from India. With a landing cost of $58 per 50kg bag, the expense exceeds ₦60,000 per bag in Lagos alone, making it difficult to compete with locally produced rice when transportation and distribution costs are factored in.
Ibrahim, who also serves as the President of Nigeria Agribusiness Group, noted that importing maize from Brazil is similarly costly compared to obtaining it domestically. Despite Brazil’s geographical proximity and shorter voyage time, the current landing costs make imported maize economically uncompetitive against locally sourced alternatives.
