Nigerians Demand Release Of Prominent Whistleblower Allegedly Arrested By FG

Nigerians have taken to social media platforms, particularly X (formerly known as Twitter), to express their outrage and demand the immediate release of an anonymous whistleblower known as PIDOM. The whistleblower, who goes by the username 99% Oppressed (@PIDOMNigeria), has reportedly been arrested by the Federal Government.

PIDOM is widely known for exposing numerous high-profile documents involving the federal government, security agencies, state governments, and private companies in acts of corruption. Beyond his whistleblowing activities, he has also been involved in humanitarian efforts, using his platform to solicit funds for Nigerians in need.

On Friday, renowned investigative journalist David Hundeyin broke the news to the public, revealing that PIDOM had gone missing. In his report titled “SOS Alert: PIDOM NIGERIA Is Missing (And I Think We May Know Who Has Him),” Hundeyin disclosed that an associate of PIDOM claimed the whistleblower was arrested on August 5th in Port Harcourt. He was allegedly transferred to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja, where he remains under the custody of the National Cybercrime Centre (NCCC).

The arrest is suspected to be connected to PIDOM’s involvement in the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria movement, with allegations that his cryptocurrency wallet was linked to funds used to support the protests. National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu recently stated that some sponsors of the movement were arrested and their crypto funds frozen.

Hundeyin speculated that the government might have obtained PIDOM’s Know Your Customer (KYC) information from Binance, potentially leading to his arrest. He expressed concern over PIDOM’s wellbeing, questioning whether the whistleblower could have been tortured or even killed in custody.

As of Friday morning, no official statement has been released by the government or any security agency regarding PIDOM’s arrest. Meanwhile, Nigerians on social media have continued to voice their concerns, criticizing the government for allegedly prioritizing the arrest of a whistleblower over addressing the country’s rampant insecurity.

Many users pointed out that while the government was quick to track down and arrest PIDOM, it has failed to curb the activities of bandits and terrorists who openly flaunt their activities on social media. One user, @jollynony, accused the government of being more focused on silencing critics than protecting its citizens from banditry.

Another user, @emmaikumeh, lamented the government’s failure to rescue 19 medical students and one doctor who have been held captive by bandits for over a week, contrasting this with the swift action taken against PIDOM. He urged the government to charge PIDOM in court if they have evidence against him, rather than keeping him in unlawful detention.

The arrest of PIDOM has sparked a broader conversation about the state of governance and security in Nigeria. Many Nigerians are questioning the priorities of the government, calling for greater transparency and accountability in its actions.
