North Not Afraid Of New Constitution, But Insecurity Must Be Addressed – ACF BoT Chairman

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Bashir Dalhatu, has expressed the North’s readiness to engage in discussions surrounding a new Nigerian constitution.

Speaking at an ACF BoT meeting in Abuja, Dalhatu emphasized that the North is not fearful of a constitutional review, despite suggestions to the contrary. He assured that the region is prepared to defend its interests through legitimate means.

Dalhatu dismissed the notion that the North is hesitant about a new constitution, stating that previous constitutional amendments were often perceived as being detrimental to the region. He reaffirmed the North’s willingness to consider any proposals for changing the constitution and Nigeria’s administrative structure.

However, Dalhatu highlighted the severe challenges posed by insecurity in the North, which he identified as the region’s most pressing issue. He lamented the ongoing violence perpetrated by Boko Haram, bandits, and other criminals, which has devastated the region, leading to widespread poverty, hunger, and displacement.

He stressed the urgency of addressing these security challenges, noting that the survival of the North depends on overcoming this crisis. Dalhatu also pointed out the negative impact of corruption, which he described as a significant barrier to achieving peace in the region. The ACF chieftain called for swift action to restore stability and prosperity in the North.
