Obaseki and Ighodalo Under Fire: Where’s the 30,000 Bags of Rice Donated by Dangote?
The people of Edo State are grappling with a fresh scandal involving the 30,000 bags of rice donated by Aliko Dangote, which has sparked accusations of gross mismanagement by Governor Godwin Obaseki. The controversy has revealed disturbing claims that the donated rice was either rebranded with the Edo State Government’s label or repackaged to support Asue Ighodalo’s gubernatorial campaign.
The scandal comes against the backdrop of unresolved issues surrounding a previous donation of 20 trailers of rice by the APC-led federal government. To date, there has been no clear resolution or explanation for the diversion of these critical supplies, raising concerns about a pattern of misappropriation and lack of transparency.
Governor Obaseki’s record has been marred by accusations of diverting rice intended for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps in Edo State, with Chief Dan Orbih famously branding him a “serial rice thief.” The latest allegations involving Dangote’s donation appear to reinforce this troubling pattern of behavior, casting serious doubts on Obaseki’s integrity and accountability.
Despite receiving over 22 billion Naira from the FAAC in the past two months and at least 10 billion Naira in federal grants, Governor Obaseki has faced criticism for his apparent focus on using state resources to bolster his political interests, particularly in supporting Ighodalo’s gubernatorial campaign, rather than addressing the pressing needs of Edo State’s citizens.
The situation calls into question the integrity and accountability of both Obaseki and Asue Ighodalo. The public is urged to scrutinize their leadership and demand officials who prioritize the welfare of Edo State’s people over personal or political gains.
