Oyo’s Crown Controversy: Alaafin Dissolves Unauthorized Committee, Puts Foot Down
The newly elected Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade I, has announced the immediate dissolution of an unauthorized coronation committee reportedly formed by a group of individuals without his consent.
In a firm statement released on Wednesday from Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, the monarch cautioned that any further meetings or activities related to this committee would be deemed illegal and will not be tolerated.
Owoade stressed that any committee or event concerning his coronation must receive prior approval from his office before being publicized.
The statement, titled “Notice of Cease & Desist Regarding Coronation Committee Setup in Oyo Town,” declared, “Let it be known that any committee or activity established or promoted without the prior consent and approval of His Imperial Majesty and his office will be considered unauthorized and will not be allowed.”
The Alaafin instructed all individuals involved to immediately stop any actions related to the unauthorized committee.
The statement clarified to both the public and the organizers of the so-called coronation committee that “No approval or consent was granted by the Alaafin, Oba Abimbola Owoade I. Therefore, all meetings on this matter must cease at once.”
While expressing gratitude for the efforts of those who spearheaded the committee, the monarch made it clear that only his office and the royal family would determine the composition of any official committee if necessary.
Oba Owoade also warned against unauthorized fundraising initiatives conducted in the name of his coronation, emphasizing that all such efforts must receive clearance from his office.
He noted, “Appreciation is extended to the organizers, and they will be contacted should there arise a need for their contributions as events develop.”
The monarch reiterated that all announcements, initiatives, or activities connected to the coronation must first be authorized by his office.
