People With Disabilities Threaten To Sue Tinubu, Give Reason

A group representing People With Disabilities (PWD), known as the Northern Nigeria Disability Forum (NNDF), has issued a warning of potential legal action against President Bola Tinubu due to their exclusion from ministerial and political appointments in the new administration.

The forum announced this intention during a press conference held in Abuja on Sunday.

They stated that they plan to utilize a law enacted by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018, which stipulates that five percent of all political appointments must be allocated to individuals with disabilities.

Yerima Suleiman, the National Chairman of the Forum, spoke during the press conference and conveyed their determination to go to court to ensure their constitutional rights are upheld.

“Our aim is to seek the court’s interpretation of the law. The law signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in 2018 mandates that five percent of political appointments must be reserved for persons with disabilities,” Suleiman explained.

He further emphasized the lack of representation of people with disabilities in recent political appointments and the consequent decision to approach the court for clarification on the law.

“We have noticed that there are no representatives among the appointments made so far, which is why we intend to seek legal interpretation of the law established by the former President. Our objection to the swearing-in ceremony of the ministers stems from the fact that although there is a commission dedicated to addressing disabilities, this does not fulfill the five percent allocation mandated by the law for political appointments,” Suleiman clarified.
