Obi made this plea in a post on his X account following his visit to the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Onitsha on Christmas Day. He expressed that empowering inmates with practical skills would better prepare them for productive lives after incarceration.

In his message, Obi shared, “In line with my tradition of reaching out to society’s most vulnerable during festive seasons, I visited the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Onitsha this Christmas. There, I spent time with inmates, alongside the Archbishop of Onitsha and Grand Patron of Nigerian Correctional Centres, to engage with those undergoing rehabilitation.”

He noted the positive impact of the Skill Acquisition Centre at the facility, which, thanks to Archbishop Okeke’s intervention, is now fully operational. Inmates are being trained in various productive skills, and the center also offers opportunities to take National Business and Technical Examinations Board exams. Additionally, the National Open University of Nigeria has set up a study center at the correctional facility.

“As someone who firmly believes in education as a vital tool for national progress, I commend these educational initiatives,” Obi said. “I’m deeply grateful to Archbishop Valerian Okeke for his ongoing support and invaluable contributions to the correctional facility and society as a whole.”

Obi urged the government to expand such initiatives to other correctional centers across the nation, emphasizing that these efforts would significantly aid in the rehabilitation of inmates—many of whom are young people—and prepare them to lead positive, productive lives that contribute to societal development.
