Popular Publisher Charged With Insulting Southern Nigerian Governor’s In-Law Sent To Prison (PHOTO)

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of CrossRiverWatch publisher Agba Jalingo in Kuje prison pending the hearing of his bail application.

The order was issued by Justice Zainab Abubakar in a ruling on Monday, after Jalingo was arraigned on a charge marked: FHC/ABJ/CR/565/2022 filed by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command.

Jalingo was accused of publishing an article that was deemed ‘insulting’ to Mrs Elizabeth Ayade, the wife of Cross River Governor Ben Ayade’s younger brother.

In the two-count charge, he is accused of making false publication with the intent of causing annoyance, ill will, and insult to Mrs. Ayade’s person.

The defendant is accused of violating Section 24 (1)b of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, and Punishment) Act 2015.

When the charge was read to Jalingo on Monday, he pleaded not guilty, prompting the prosecutor, Fidelis Ogbobe, to seek an adjournment of the trial.

Baba Isa, the defendant’s lawyer, did not object to Ogbode’s request for adjournment, but instead asked the court to hear the defendant’s bail application, which he said was filed by his senior colleague, Marshal Abubakar.

Ogbobe objected to Isa’s application, citing Section 354 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, 2015 to support his claim that the defense intended to stall the case’s progress.

Although Abubakar later attended the proceedings, Justice Abubakar refused to allow him to participate in the case because he had been recorded absent.

Justice Abubakar then adjourned the case until March 30, 2023, for the hearing of the bail application, and until May 31, 2023, for the start of the trial.
