Presidency Hits Back At Obasanjo: ‘Democracy Suffered Mortal Wounds Under Your Watch

Communication and Orientation, responded to Obasanjo’s recent criticisms of President Tinubu’s leadership, labeling the former president as a man with a penchant for mischief.

In his response, Dare described Obasanjo’s remarks as “hallucinatory,” suggesting that the former president was distorting facts. He recalled the controversial $16 billion that was allegedly diverted during Obasanjo’s administration, intended for Nigeria’s electricity sector but instead resulting in what Dare called “megawatts of darkness.” According to Dare, Obasanjo’s administration failed to address the nation’s energy needs, undermining his moral authority to criticize any government today.

“Obasanjo’s rhetoric on fighting corruption rings hollow, given his track record,” Dare remarked. “Under his watch, Nigeria witnessed one of its most corrupt periods, and there’s still no explanation for the $16 billion misappropriation meant to stabilize electricity.”

Dare further accused Obasanjo of inflicting “mortal wounds” on Nigeria’s democracy, citing his push for an ill-fated third term as a prime example of how Obasanjo’s tenure destabilized the country. He noted that subsequent administrations, including President Tinubu’s, have had to work hard to clean up the mess left behind.

“Obasanjo’s tenure left Nigeria in a state of disarray, and it is laughable that he now seeks to criticize others,” Dare added. “He should apologize to Nigerians for failing to build the foundational infrastructure needed for the nation’s progress.”

Dare emphasized that President Tinubu is actively working to put Nigeria back on the path to development, urging Obasanjo to reflect on his own contributions to the current state of the country instead of tearing down those in leadership today.
