President Tinubu Advocates Urgent Climate Financing at National Summit, Calls for Bold Action on Emission Reductions(Video/Photos)

At the National Climate Security Summit in Abuja, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Engr. Abubakar Momoh FNSE, Minister of Regional  Development, made a powerful case for immediate and substantial financial commitments to address Nigeria’s climate challenges. Themed “Actualising Financial Commitments Towards Climate Change and National Development,” the summit gathered top leaders and experts to address the environmental crises impacting national stability.

The event opened with remarks from Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe, DG/CEO of the National Council on Climate Change, who highlighted the critical need for strategic financing in combating climate change. Dr. Katrin Jansen, Head of Cooperation at the German Embassy, emphasized the role of international collaboration in building climate resilience. Goodwill messages followed from Senator Seriake Dickson and Hon. Kama Nkemkanma, Chair of the House Committee on Climate Change and Security, both stressing the urgency of national climate commitments.

Delivering the president’s address, Engr. Momoh outlined Nigeria’s ambitious climate goals under the Paris Agreement, including plans to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 20% unconditionally and up to 47% with additional global support. He underscored the government’s dedication to mobilizing both domestic and international funding to back these targets, calling the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) a “transformative step toward a cleaner, more sustainable Nigeria.”
