According to Dr. Adaeze Oreh, the State Commissioner for Health, the outbreak has tragically claimed the life of one individual. Additionally, three other cases have been identified and successfully treated, with the patients now reunited with their families.

Dr. Oreh provided details on the ongoing efforts to combat the outbreak, revealing that out of 42 suspected cases, 31 were identified as symptomatic high-risk contacts. Vigilant surveillance measures have been implemented, with 72 contacts placed under close monitoring. Encouragingly, 30 of them have completed the mandatory incubation period and exited the follow-up scheme, with the remaining contacts expected to follow suit soon.

Collaborative efforts involving the State Ministry of Health, the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, and other stakeholders, including the World Health Organization, are underway to contain the outbreak swiftly and effectively.

Dr. Oreh emphasized the government’s resolute response to the challenge, urging all healthcare centers to maintain rigorous surveillance systems and adhere to standard infection prevention protocols. She also issued practical advice to the public, including measures to prevent rodent infestation and maintain clean household environments.

With concerted and dedicated efforts, the government aims to contain the outbreak promptly, ensuring the protection of lives and the overall well-being of the community.
