See The 71-Year-Old Retiree Tinubu Is Considering As ICPC Chairman – Source

According to PREMIUM TIMES, President Bola Tinubu is reportedly contemplating recalling a 71-year-old former Justice of the Supreme Court, Abdu Aboki, from retirement to head the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

Abdu Aboki, a native of Kano State, exited the Supreme Court due to the mandatory retirement age of 70 on August 5, 2022.

Although the current ICPC chairman, Bolaji Owasanoye, has about six months remaining in his five-year tenure, Mr. Tinubu has reportedly suggested Mr. Aboki as his successor.

If appointed, Mr. Aboki would continue the tradition of selecting the head of the commission from among retired, relatively older judges of the appellate courts. This contrasts with the recent trend of appointing younger individuals to lead anti-corruption agencies.

Mr. Aboki’s qualifications meet the requirements outlined in the ICPC Act of 2000. He holds a proven integrity and has been called to the Nigerian Bar for over 10 years, which is the minimum qualification to become a judge of a superior court of record in Nigeria.

Concerns have been raised about Mr. Aboki’s age, as appointing an older individual to head a crucial anti-corruption agency like the ICPC may not align with the dynamic and evolving nature of corruption trends.

However, supporters argue that Mr. Aboki’s age and extensive experience in the Nigerian judiciary hierarchy could be a valuable asset for an ICPC chairperson dealing with legal challenges and the prosecution of corruption suspects, particularly high-profile cases.

Mr. Aboki, who retired from the Supreme Court in September 2022, has a distinguished legal career spanning 38 years. He served on various election petition tribunals across Nigeria and was appointed to the Supreme Court bench in November 2020.

At his retirement, Mr. Aboki called for transparency in the expenditure of funds allocated to the judiciary and advocated for a reduction in the number of appeals going to the Supreme Court.

If appointed, Mr. Aboki would be the third justice from Nigeria’s appellate courts to lead the ICPC, following Mustapha Akanbi and Emmanuel Ayoola.
