Sultan Of Sokoto Demands Urgent Social Media Regulation, Warns Of Threat To National Unity

The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has urged the Federal Government to introduce firm regulations to control the use of social media platforms, warning that the unchecked spread of fake news poses a serious threat to Nigeria’s peace and unity.

According to reports from credible sources, the monarch made this call on Tuesday during the General Assembly of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council in Birnin Kebbi. He expressed concern that misinformation continues to circulate widely online, with many Nigerians quick to believe and act on unverified information.

“It is time for the government to regulate social media in the country. The spread of fake news is dangerous and must be addressed,” the Sultan cautioned.

He further commended the Nigerian Armed Forces for their relentless efforts to restore peace and stability in areas affected by insecurity, particularly in regions battling banditry and insurgency. He noted that their dedication and sacrifices made it possible for the council’s meeting to hold in Kebbi State.

“I condemn the harsh criticism often directed at our military because of temporary setbacks. These men and women are doing their best to protect our nation. Such negative remarks only dampen their morale,” the Sultan said.

Also speaking at the event, the Vice Chairman of the Northern Traditional Rulers Council and Emir of Borno, Abubakar Elkanemi, emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration in addressing the North’s persistent security challenges. He stated that the assembly’s theme, ‘Strengthening Community Collaboration for Lasting Peace and Security in Northern Nigeria,’ highlights the role of traditional institutions in promoting peace through dialogue and cooperation.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, the Etsu Nupe, and other prominent traditional leaders from across the northern region.
