The Supreme Court set February 6 for a final ruling in the long-running legal battle over the authenticity of the All Progressives Congress, APC Senatorial candidate for Yobe North Senatorial District.

The incumbent Senate President, Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, and one Bashir Sheriff Machina are both involved in a legal battle for the Senate ticket.

After hearing arguments from counsel for the All Progressives Congress APC and Bashir Sheriff Machina, the Supreme Court set the judgment date.

The APC, which is supporting Senate President Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan as its Senatorial candidate, has filed an appeal against the Federal High Court and Court of Appeal rulings that named Bashir Sheriff Machina as the party’s candidate.

The APC claimed in its arguments presented by Sepiribo Cromwell Peters that the May 27, 2022 primary election that produced Bashir Sheriff Machina was illegal because it was conducted by illegal people.

He claimed that another primary election held on June 6 that produced Senate President Ahmad Lawan was the party’s genuine election.

Mr Sarafa Yusuff, counsel to Bashir Sheriff Machina, however, asked the Supreme Court to dismiss the APC’s appeal as frivolous and without merit.

He informed the Supreme Court that the APC’s Danjuma Manga Committee conducted the primary election on behalf of the APC’s National Working Committee.

Yusuff drew the Court’s attention to an affidavit deposed by Danjuma Manga, according to which he was mandated by the APC National Secretariat, along with five others, to conduct the Senatorial primary elections in Yobe State.

The counsel argued that the affidavit of the said Danjuma Manga had not been disputed or denied by the APC until now, and he urged the Court to confirm Bashir Sheriff Machina as the genuine Senatorial candidate of the APC for Yobe North Senatorial District.
