Tension In Niger Republic As Many Soldiers Killed In Fresh Attack Amid Coup And Concerns Over ECOWAS Military Intervention
Seventeen Nigerian soldiers lost their lives on Tuesday in an assault by suspected jihadists near the country’s western border with Mali, as confirmed by the defense ministry.
An army unit fell victim to a terrorist ambush close to the town of Koutougou, stated a ministry announcement released late on Tuesday.
The statement also revealed that an additional 20 soldiers were injured, six of them seriously, with all casualties being transported to the capital city of Niamey.
During their retreat, more than 100 attackers were “neutralized,” according to the military.
For over a decade, an insurgency led by jihadists has plagued the Sahel region of Africa, initially erupting in northern Mali in 2012 before spreading to neighboring countries such as Niger and Burkina Faso in 2015.
Referred to as the “three borders” area encompassing these three nations, it frequently becomes a target for assaults by rebels affiliated with the Islamic State group and Al-Qaeda.
The widespread turmoil in the region has resulted in the deaths of numerous soldiers, police personnel, and civilians, forcing millions to abandon their homes.
The ongoing bloodshed has contributed to military coups in all three countries since 2020, with Niger being the most recent to experience a coup on July 26 when President Mohamed Bazoum was overthrown.
Furthermore, Niger is contending with a jihadist insurgency in its southeastern regions due to militants crossing over from northeastern Nigeria – the birthplace of a campaign initiated by Boko Haram in 2010.
