The 38-year-old football star fell victim to an unknown assailant who fired six shots at him around 11 am local time on Sunday. The incident occurred in the Santa Inés neighborhood of Cuautla, Morelos, where a friendly match was taking place.
Jáuregui, a seasoned defender, had briefly stepped off the field to rehydrate at the bench when the attacker approached him and fired at close range. The assailant swiftly fled the scene on a waiting motorbike at the entrance to the ground, leaving the footballer critically wounded.
Despite the quick response of emergency services and ambulances, they were unable to save Jáuregui, and he succumbed to his injuries almost immediately.
Atlético de San Luis Rey, a team with whom Jáuregui had a significant playing history, expressed their sorrow in a poignant statement on their official Facebook page. The team mourned the loss of their former player and captain, extending heartfelt condolences to his family.
The statement read, ‘We regret the death of our former player and Captain Sergio Jáuregui, who defended the colors of our team in the last Torneo de los Soles. We send our deepest condolences to his family.’
The team also acknowledged Jáuregui’s dedication on the field, stating, ‘We appreciate how you defended our badge and left everything on the field match after match. For that reason, we will always carry you in our badge and heart. Thank you very much to the ‘Eternal Captain of Cuautla.”
Having played the majority of his professional career in Bolivia, Jáuregui had a brief stint with the top-flight Swiss side Yverdon-Sport FC in 2005, lasting only a few months.
He earned 13 caps for the Bolivian national team before retiring from professional sports in 2015 at the age of 30, as reported by Diario AS. The football community mourns the untimely loss of Sergio Jáuregui, remembering him for his contributions to the sport.
