During the celebration of his 80th birthday and book presentation on Thursday, February 1, 2024, Cardinal Onaiyekan emphasized the crucial role of religion as a catalyst for peace. Despite common perceptions blaming religion for conflicts in Nigeria, the cardinal passionately argued that religion, when practiced authentically, serves as a pivotal force in promoting harmony.
Amidst the ongoing dialogue on peace in Nigeria, Cardinal Onaiyekan expressed his joy, highlighting that the nation’s progress hinges on the preservation of a peaceful environment. The cardinal’s resounding message challenges the prevailing notion that religion is a source of discord, asserting instead that true religion must be synonymous with peace.
He stated, “They even blame religion for our situation. But my position is that true religion must be about peace. Whatever you do, even if you shout the name of God a thousand times, and you are hurting your neighbor and killing the innocent, that is not religion.”
Cardinal Onaiyekan underscored the significance of presenting religion as a force for peace, emphasizing that those who use religious rhetoric to endorse war and conflict are failing to embody the true essence of their faith. His words serve as a poignant reminder of the profound responsibility incumbent upon individuals practicing and preaching any religion.
