Troost-Ekong’s Legacy Shines: Coach Praises Former Super Eagles Captain As He Exits Al-Kholood

According to Ireporter Online, Al-Kholood head coach Des Buckingham has paid a heartfelt tribute to William Troost-Ekong, describing the former Super Eagles captain as an irreplaceable figure following his departure from the Saudi Pro League club.

Troost-Ekong, who joined Al-Kholood from Greek side PAOK in the summer of 2024, completed a move to Qatari club Al Ahli SC during the January transfer window, bringing an end to a brief but impactful spell at the club.

Speaking at a press conference, Buckingham emphasized that while Al-Kholood will recruit a player to fill Troost-Ekong’s position on the pitch, the defender’s overall influence on the team cannot be replicated. “You can’t replace William, and I don’t want to replace him as a player or as a person,” he said. “There will be someone who comes in to take his place as a player.”

Buckingham described the Nigerian international as the finest captain he has worked with at the club, praising Troost-Ekong’s leadership both on and off the field. According to the coach, the defender played a pivotal role in shaping the dressing room culture and the broader team environment.

He added that Troost-Ekong had been instrumental in helping him settle at Al-Kholood and in setting standards within the squad. “He has been a really important part of helping me get settled at the club and also making sure the culture and the environment are taken care of,” Buckingham said.

Looking ahead, Buckingham stressed that Troost-Ekong’s contribution will continue to resonate long after his exit. “He has helped guide and support the players throughout that journey. I don’t think we can replace William,” he noted.
