Trump’s remarks come amidst ongoing legal proceedings against those charged in connection with the riot, which saw individuals storming the Capitol in an attempt to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.

In a statement posted on his Truth Social website, Trump also promised to close the border with Mexico as part of his initial actions if reelected, although he did not provide specific details.

He wrote, “My first acts as your next President will be to Close the Border, DRILL, BABY, DRILL, and Free the January 6 Hostages being wrongfully imprisoned!”

This isn’t the first time Trump has referred to the rioters as “hostages” or advocated for their release. He previously urged President Biden to “release the J6 hostages” during a campaign rally in January.

Trump, who is facing multiple criminal indictments related to his efforts to overturn the election results, remains a significant figure within the Republican Party and is expected to secure the party’s presidential nomination.
