The Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has announced the formation of a committee tasked with reviewing the National Child Policy established in 2007.In a statement released on Friday and signed by her Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Jonathan Eze, the minister highlighted the initiative as a significant step in her commitment to safeguarding children’s welfare.

She underscored that this effort reflects her determination to create an environment where Nigerian children can thrive and achieve their full potential.

The committee, led by Dr. Maryam Keshinro, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women Affairs, has been urged to take a holistic approach that involves collaboration with stakeholders from various sectors, including government, civil society, and especially the voices of children.

The minister emphasized the need for the policy to be inclusive, addressing the varied needs of all children, particularly those from marginalized groups and those with disabilities.

Excerpt from the statement: “As we gather today, we must acknowledge a fundamental truth: our children are the foundation of our nation. They are not merely the future leaders; they represent our greatest hope and most valuable asset.

“It is crucial to uphold their rights and meet their needs, cultivating an environment where they can flourish and fulfill their potential.

“Our focus on this essential task of reassessing the National Child Policy signifies the advancements we have achieved since its implementation. Despite notable progress in areas such as education, health, and child protection, we must also confront persistent challenges, including poverty, gender inequality, insufficient access to quality education, and the impacts of insecurity threatening our children’s futures.

“In light of this, it is vital that the committee recognizes the critical and challenging nature of its mission. You are entrusted with reviewing a policy that will guide our nation in safeguarding and promoting children’s rights. Your expertise, insights, and commitment are key to ensuring that this policy resonates with the realities faced by children today while preparing for future challenges.”

Sulaiman-Ibrahim further encouraged the committee to adopt a comprehensive approach, actively engaging stakeholders across all sectors—government, civil society, and crucially, the children themselves.

She reiterated the importance of creating a policy that is inclusive and responsive to the diverse needs of all children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds and those with disabilities.

The minister also called for the integration of technology and innovation within their strategies. “As you know, the world is evolving rapidly, and our policies must adapt to ensure that our children are equipped with the skills and knowledge to succeed in an ever-changing global landscape,” she stated.

“This review is not merely an exercise in drafting documents or frameworks; it is about transforming lives and ensuring that every child in Nigeria has access to education, healthcare, and a secure environment necessary for their growth and development.”

Sulaiman-Ibrahim expressed her gratitude to the committee members for their commitment to this crucial task, believing they can create a lasting impact for future generations.

“We can achieve success only through diligent, passionate, and collaborative efforts to establish a National Child Policy that is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound,” she added.

The minister also thanked President Bola Tinubu for fostering an environment that enables her to fulfill the objectives of the Ministry of Women Affairs, Children, and Vulnerable Groups without impediment. She expressed her appreciation to the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for her support and guidance, which have been instrumental in her effective execution of duties.

In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary thanked the minister for her leadership and assured her that the committee would work diligently to produce comprehensive policy documents that benefit Nigerian children.

The event was attended by ministry directors and the consultant, Professor Taofeek Muhammad Ladan, among others.
