UNODC Applauds NDLEA’s Major Drug Crackdown

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has commended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for recording significant milestones in the fight against drug trafficking, citing a surge in arrests, seizures, and successful prosecutions over the past five years.

According to Ireporter Online, the global agency noted that under the current leadership of the NDLEA, Nigeria has shed its previous image as a favourable environment for drug cartels. Speaking at a ceremony in Abuja on April 27, UNODC Country Representative in Nigeria, Cheikh Ousmane Toure, highlighted the growing threat posed by transnational drug trafficking, describing it as a major driver of corruption, violence, and societal harm across regions. He explained that Nigeria’s strategic position has historically made it both a target and transit route for criminal networks operating between Latin America, Asia, and Africa.

Toure praised the leadership of Mohamed Buba Marwa, noting that since his appointment in 2021, the agency has intensified enforcement efforts, increased high-profile drug seizures, and broadened prevention and treatment programmes. These efforts, he said, have sent a strong signal to international criminal groups that Nigeria is no longer a safe haven for illicit drug operations.

The commendation came during the handover of newly equipped audiovisual interview rooms to the NDLEA, a project supported by the United States government through the United States International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs. Toure expressed appreciation for the partnership, stating that the investment represents a commitment to strengthening transparency, fairness, and accountability within Nigeria’s justice system. He also urged the replication of such facilities across NDLEA commands nationwide.

In his remarks, Marwa acknowledged the support of UNODC and US-INL, assuring stakeholders of the agency’s readiness to maximise the new resources. He emphasised that the upgraded facilities would enhance investigative integrity and align the agency with global best practices, particularly as the NDLEA advances its digital transformation agenda.

Marwa further noted that the modern interview rooms symbolise trust and collaboration between Nigeria and its international partners, adding that they would improve operational efficiency, strengthen investigative standards, and ensure greater transparency in law enforcement processes. He reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to utilising the technology effectively to deliver measurable results in the ongoing fight against drug trafficking.

The event was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives of the United States government, UNODC officials, and senior members of the NDLEA leadership.
