Dr. Oyinkepreye Bebeteidoh, chairman of ASUU at NDU, reiterated the union’s position, highlighting unresolved issues such as inadequate funding, poor working conditions, and unresolved salary discrepancies.

Speaking after a union meeting in Yenagoa, Bebeteidoh emphasized that the strike is not only about the rights of the lecturers but also the future of education in Bayelsa State. “We cannot, in good conscience, resume teaching under these conditions,” he stated.

The strike, which began on December 10, 2024, has brought academic activities at the university to a standstill. Lecturers are demanding a salary increment of 25%-35% for members, with arrears to be paid from January 2023.

ASUU is also pressing for the immediate implementation of the N80,000 minimum wage for its members, along with payment of arrears dating back to 2018. The union also advocates for payment of promotion arrears from 2018 onwards, provision of residential accommodations to alleviate commuting challenges, recruitment of more academic staff, and continued funding to meet accreditation requirements.

The union has called on the state government to urgently fulfill the terms of the October 2024 MoU to prevent further escalation of the strike. Bebeteidoh acknowledged the hardships the strike has caused for students and their families but emphasized that the action is necessary for a sustainable and fair education system.

“The ball is in the government’s court,” Bebeteidoh warned, adding that any further delay in implementing the MoU will have serious consequences for students, faculty, and the education sector in Bayelsa State. The ASUU leadership urged the government to act promptly and address the issues at hand to bring the crisis to a resolution and restore normalcy at the university.
