US Trains Nigerian Troops in Bauchi on Drones, Tactical Warfare

According to the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), the exercises are designed to strengthen the operational capabilities, readiness and long-term capacity of Nigerian security forces while improving cooperation between personnel from both nations.

The training, conducted at an undisclosed US operating location in Bauchi, covers a broad range of military skills, including unmanned aircraft systems, tactical combat casualty care, weapons familiarisation, camouflage techniques, water treatment and testing, explosive ordnance disposal and small-unit tactics.

AFRICOM disclosed that the programme includes Combat Lifesaver and Tactical Combat Casualty Care instruction, alongside practical sessions designed to improve the ability of Nigerian personnel to respond effectively to battlefield situations.

The US command said the training forms part of a wider security cooperation initiative aimed at sharing military expertise and strengthening the relationship between the American and Nigerian armed forces.

Capt. Gabriel Feingold, a logistics officer with the US Army Southern European Task Force, Africa and operations officer at the Bauchi location, explained that American military units presented Nigerian commanders with several training options, from which the Nigerian side selected areas considered most relevant to its operational needs.

Unmanned aircraft systems reportedly attracted significant interest from the Nigerian forces. Sgt. Mark Murphy, an intelligence analyst with the 13th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, led training for about 10 members of the Nigerian Air Force Special Forces Regiment.

The session began with classroom instruction before the Nigerian personnel proceeded to practical exercises, where they received hands-on experience in operating the unmanned aircraft.

AFRICOM noted that the exercises were not limited to technical and combat skills, but also provided an opportunity for personnel from both countries to develop stronger professional relationships and improve interoperability.

Feingold said the interaction between the two forces was particularly important at the junior levels, where direct engagement can help build trust and improve cooperation during future joint operations.

The latest training highlights the continuing security partnership between Nigeria and the United States, with both countries seeking to enhance military preparedness and strengthen their ability to respond to emerging security challenges.
