What Happened To 14 Passengers As Bus Caught Fire On Lagos-Ibadan Expressway

In the early hours of Saturday, a commercial bus carrying fourteen passengers caught fire on the long bridge of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The Toyota Hiace, with license plate AFN117YL, en route to Ilorin, experienced a tire burst, causing it to skid and fall on its side, hitting the bridge’s sidewalk.

The vehicle, already engulfed in flames, came to a stop in the middle of the road, prompting passengers to seek safety.

The bus driver, Razak Ajiboro, recounted that the front tire on the driver’s side burst while in motion, causing the ensuing impact and fire. He expressed gratitude to God for preventing a potential tragedy, emphasizing that it was a divine intervention. Fortunately, all fourteen passengers escaped with minor scratches, and no lives were lost.

Despite the intense heat and fast-spreading fire, none of the passengers’ belongings could be salvaged, as everything inside the bus was consumed. The driver clarified that the bus did not belong to him but to his employer, and he had already informed him of the accident. He added that his personal belongings, including his two phones, were also lost in the fire.

One passenger, Ilyas, provided an account slightly different from the driver’s. According to him, the driver had stopped at Ojota to tighten the bolts on the back tires shortly after departing from the park. While on the long bridge, a rear tire suddenly burst, causing the bus to swerve and tip over. The fire had started at the back of the bus by this point. They managed to escape after one passenger successfully forced open the door.

Awojobi Isiaka, another passenger, emphasized their good fortune to be alive and attributed the incident to an explosion from the rear tire. He expressed his loss of all personal belongings, including educational and professional certificates, as well as gifts for his family. Despite the ordeal, he praised the passengers’ collective efforts in ensuring everyone’s safety.

Authorities from the Federal Road Safety Corp and the Nigeria Police were present to manage traffic and ensure the security of lives and property. Another bus arrived to transport the passengers to their destination.
