Why Current Constitution Must Be Changed – Ayo Adebanjo

Ayo Adebanjo

Afenifere leader, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, emphasized the necessity of discarding the 1999 Constitution to resolve many of Nigeria’s persistent challenges hindering progress.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s “Sunrise Daily” on Saturday, Adebanjo asserted that Nigeria’s trajectory would shift for the better once the constitution, which he claimed was imposed on the nation by the military, is revised.

He stated that after gaining independence, “we lost the ball when the military seized control and changed the constitution.” He went on to say that this action is undermining the groundwork for a stable future for the country.

“We’ve been going in the wrong direction since the military took over, and we’ve continued in the wrong direction since they returned to the barracks. They didn’t go back with their constitution, which we didn’t know about,” Adebanjo explained.

“They imposed a constitution on us, and that’s the root of today’s problem. So, to return to where we were, we must change this constitution. That’s the crux of our problem. All the issues we’re facing are rooted in the fraudulent constitution imposed on us by the military,” he stated.

The veteran statesman argued that a unitary constitution is unsuitable for a multi-ethnic nation like Nigeria.

“You cannot govern this country with a unitary system of government. The problem of disunity arises from the unitary system of government that the colonialists employed. However, when we switched to federalism after the London Constitutional Conference in 1953, which took effect in 1954, there were no problems or issues before then,” Adebanjo pointed out.

“What I’m saying is that the challenges we face in this country today, be they economic, political, or cultural, are rooted in the way we are running the country with a flawed constitution that was not in place when we gained independence,” he concluded.
