Wrexham AFC have congratulated goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo following confirmation of his maiden call-up to the Super Eagles of Nigeria ahead of the Unity Cup.

According to Ireporter Online, the Championship side moved swiftly to acknowledge the development even before the Nigeria Football Federation officially released its squad list. In a post on X, the club wrote: “Congratulations to Arthur Okonkwo on receiving his first call-up to the Nigeria squad ahead of the Unity Cup.”

Okonkwo, 24, who previously represented England at youth level, has now completed his switch of international allegiance to Nigeria. The former Arsenal and Sturm Graz shot-stopper is expected to be in contention for his debut when the Super Eagles face Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final scheduled for Tuesday, May 26.

The match will be played at The Valley, home of Charlton Athletic. In the other semi-final fixture, India will take on Jamaica on Wednesday, with the tournament final set for Saturday, May 30, at the same venue.

Speaking through the national team media unit, Okonkwo described his invitation as a significant milestone in his career after months of discussions with the national team setup.

“It is a privilege to be granted the chance to play for your country. I am extremely excited and eagerly await the opportunity,” he said.

“I have been looking forward to this moment for quite some time, and to finally have the chance is remarkable.

“The process began last summer when I spoke with the manager and the goalkeeping coach. They expressed their interest in me, and the discussions were very encouraging. Since then, we have been working to finalise my switch from England to Nigeria.”
