JUST IN: Portugal Appoints New Coach (PHOTO)

Roberto Martinez, the immediate past coach of Belgium, has been named as the new coach of Portugal’s national team.

On Monday, the Portuguese Football Federation made the announcement on its Facebook page.

The post included a photo of the Spaniard with the caption, “A new Leader at the service of Portugal: welcome, Mister Roberto Martinez!”

Martinez, 49, succeeds Fernando Santos, who won Euro 2016 and the first UEFA Nations League title with Belgium after stepping down as coach following their elimination from the World Cup in Qatar in the group stage.

The former Everton manager, who had a plethora of stars to manage while coaching Belgium, will have it even tougher with Portugal, who boast some of the biggest names in world football, including captain Cristiano Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes, and Bernado Silva, among others.

Martinez has been accused by many of underachieving with the Belgium team, which was widely regarded as the country’s golden generation.

However, under his leadership, Belgium topped the FIFA world rankings for more than three years.
