Authorities in Edo State have arrested two village chiefs in connection with the January 7 train attack that resulted in the kidnapping of 20 passengers at the Igueben train station.

Chris Nehikhare, the state Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, stated that seven other suspects had been arrested in connection with the incident and that two remaining passengers had been rescued by security agents.

This was revealed by a government spokesman shortly after the state executive council meeting in Benin on Wednesday.

“The success story in the kidnapping is that five persons and two village chiefs have been arrested in connection with the incident and they are helping with investigations,” Nehikhare said.

When asked for the names of the village chiefs, he said more information should be obtained from the police.

Chidi Nwabuzor, the state police spokesman, could not be reached for comment because his phone was turned off.
