Was it a booby trap or was it for camaraderie? The recent implementation of fuel subsidy removal in Nigeria, just before Tinubu’s emergence as president, raises questions about its true intentions. However, the consequences of this decision are evident, with Nigerians now facing the harsh realities of increased living costs.

Once considered an affordable country to live in, Nigeria has now become a place of luxury, especially considering the minimum wage of its citizens.

The removal of the petrol subsidy has resulted in low commuter numbers in cities across the nation, causing people to drastically adjust their daily movements while fearing the imminent rise in the prices of essential commodities, including food items.

The prevailing reality is that the wealthy elite have feasted on the nation’s resources through this subsidy, which the president claims can no longer be justified due to depleting resources.

Tinubu, the newly sworn-in president, is seen as a Superman figure, expected to take charge and confront this longstanding issue. With his background as a sound accountant and skilled negotiator in the finance sector, Tinubu should have the means to alleviate the plight faced by the people.

Tinubu has wasted no time in hitting the ground running, engaging in extensive meetings with key sectors, including the labor unions, to seek solutions and ameliorate the plight of the citizens resulting from the removal of the fuel subsidy.

One key ally in these negotiations with the NLC is Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, the former president of the NLC. His involvement underscores his relevance and usefulness to the present administration, where negotiations and adherence to the rule of law are of utmost importance.

Having previously served as a labor leader, executive governor, and now a senator, Nigerians look up to Adams Oshiomhole not only to provide favorable legislation for the masses but also to offer valuable advice to the ruling government, given his significant role in bringing them to power.

Oshiomhole’s fiery personality and his campaign promises of Tinubu’s generosity towards the youth, women, the vulnerable, and the masses have instilled renewed hope in the people.

As Tinubu marshals plans to restore pride in Nigerians’ heritage, it is imperative to acknowledge individuals like Adams Oshiomhole, who are expected to bring their relevance to the fore.

The NLC, too, should stand on the path of truth and justice and lend their valuable support to Tinubu’s administration in tackling the fuel crisis head-on. Going on strike at this crucial point, as the new administration takes off, would only be counterproductive.

Tinubu has made promises to address security concerns, revitalize the economy, create job opportunities, improve agriculture, enhance infrastructure, reform monetary policies, and strengthen foreign relations—all of which will have an immediate impact on the lives of Nigerians. As the country embarks on this new phase, it is vital to maintain a positive outlook and contribute to the realization of a better future for all.

The removal of fuel subsidy in Nigeria has brought about significant challenges for the citizens. However, with Tinubu assuming the presidency, there is hope that his leadership skills and expertise will be utilized to alleviate these hardships.
