529 Foreign-trained Doctors Failed Medical Exam – MDCN

The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) recently conducted an assessment examination for foreign-trained medical and dental graduates, which took place on July 12 and 13, 2023, at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

Out of the 734 participants (704 medical and 30 dental graduates), only 205 (189 medical and 16 dental graduates) managed to pass the examination. Unfortunately, the remaining 529 (515 medical and 14 dental graduates) did not meet the required standard.

Dr Tajudeen Sanusi, the MDCN Registrar, expressed concern about the pass rate, which stood at 27.4%. Nonetheless, he emphasized the importance of the assessment exam to ensure the safety and well-being of Nigerians by maintaining a high standard of medical practice in the country.

He stressed that this exam is a global practice, as it is common for doctors who have been trained in one jurisdiction to undergo assessment exams if they intend to practice in another jurisdiction, even for highly qualified professionals.

In conclusion, the MDCN assessment examination serves as a compulsory measure for all foreign-trained doctors seeking to practice in Nigeria.

The exam aims to assess candidates’ application of basic medical sciences and clinical skills in a healthcare setting, guaranteeing the nation’s healthcare system’s integrity and quality of service.
