Lagos Govt Reacts To Leaked Memo On Mass Burial For 103 ENDSARS Victims

The Lagos State Government has addressed a leaked memo that disclosed its approval of N61,285,000 for the mass burial of 103 individuals identified as victims of the 2020 EndSARS protests.

The government clarified that the victims to be buried were not related to the controversial Lekki Tollgate shooting.

The memo, dated July 19, 2023, outlining the procedures for processing funds after the governor’s approval, surfaced on social media, causing public outrage.

In response, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, confirmed the authenticity of the letter in a statement on Sunday evening. However, he asserted that the details were being misconstrued.

According to the government official, the victims mentioned in the memo were individuals who lost their lives in the aftermath of the EndSARS protests due to incidents of violence and community clashes.

The Lagos State Environmental Health Unit (SEHMU) collected bodies from areas such as Fagba, Ketu, Ikorodu, Orile, Ajegunle, Abule-Egba, Ikeja, Ojota, Ekoro, Ogba, Isolo, Ajah, and there was also a jailbreak at Ikoyi Prison.

The statement emphasized that the 103 casualties mentioned in the document were not from the Lekki Tollgate incident, as alleged.

The government clarified that no bodies were retrieved from the Lekki Tollgate during the EndSARS protests.
