‘Criminal Wage’ – What Oshiomhole Said Concerning Minimum Wage Will Stun Workers (DETAILS)

During a live appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Adams Oshiomhole, the senator representing Edo North senatorial district, criticized the N30,000 monthly minimum wage, calling it a “criminal wage.”

He expressed that the value of this wage has significantly depreciated over the years, particularly when compared to the exchange rate of the currency.

The former governor of Edo State argued that responsible private-sector employers are generally better payers compared to the Federal Government or state governments.

To illustrate his point, he revealed that he personally pays his cleaner a monthly salary of N60,000, which he arrived at considering the cost of living and his conscience.

Oshiomhole emphasized that he couldn’t pay his cleaner any less, considering her circumstances, such as having four children to support. He explained that even though N60,000 might not provide a comfortable living standard, it represents the “irreducible minimum” for her survival.

He further mentioned that he would compensate his driver and security personnel more than his cleaner due to the additional responsibilities and training they require.
