Behind The Scenes: How Tinubu Rescued Keyamo From Senate Scrutiny During Ministerial Screening

The Senate’s ministerial screening process took an unexpected turn as Festus Keyamo, the minister-designate from Delta State, found himself on the precipice of rejection. However, a timely intervention by President Bola Tinubu averted what could have been a significant setback for Keyamo’s ministerial aspirations. This incident sheds light on the intricate interplay of power dynamics within Nigerian politics.

Amidst the backdrop of Keyamo’s controversial handling of the Special Public Works (SPW) program under the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), tensions flared during his screening session before the 9th National Assembly members. Keyamo’s perceived disregard for the National Assembly’s role in overseeing the SPW program implementation triggered considerable backlash.

The SPW initiative, aimed at employing unskilled youths across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas for a three-month period, stirred controversy due to allegations of mismanagement and lack of transparency surrounding the disbursement of the allocated N52 billion fund.

Senator Darlington Nwokocha, the Senate Minority Whip, ignited the confrontation by raising objections to Keyamo’s approach. He asserted that Keyamo had sidestepped the National Assembly’s request for an explanation regarding the program’s execution. As tensions escalated, Senator Nwokocha proposed a motion to suspend Keyamo’s screening until he provided a comprehensive account of the N52 billion utilization.

A stormy session unfolded, punctuated by division and uproar among the legislators. To restore order, the Senate President intervened and advocated for a closed-door session to address the escalating crisis.

Following the closed-door deliberations that spanned three hours, Keyamo emerged to offer a formal apology to the Senate. The apology was met with mixed reactions among the senators, reflecting the depth of disagreement on the issue. The motion to accept Keyamo’s apology was eventually proposed by Senator Ali Ndume and seconded by Senator Barinada Mpigi, leading to a motion to allow Keyamo to “take a bow and go.”

However, the intrigue did not end there. Behind the scenes, President Bola Tinubu played a pivotal role in ensuring Keyamo’s ministerial clearance. Recognizing the significance of this situation, the Senate President, along with key lawmakers, sought an audience with Tinubu at the Aso Villa. The meeting aimed to secure Tinubu’s support and potentially mitigate the fallout from the confrontation.

Tinubu’s intervention underscores the intricate power dynamics that underpin Nigerian politics. His influence and rapport with key political figures played a crucial role in diffusing the crisis and securing Keyamo’s path to ministerial approval.

In this unfolding drama, the tale of Festus Keyamo’s screening showcases how alliances, political maneuvering, and personal relationships can sway the course of political events. The episode serves as a reminder that the political landscape in Nigeria, like many other nations, is often shaped by more than just the issues on the surface.
