Lagos Government Implements Rehabilitation Program for Men Engaging In Domestic Violence
Titilola Vivour Adeniyi, the Executive Secretary of Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT), has announced the commencement of a therapy initiative targeting male individuals involved in perpetrating domestic violence.
The program is being conducted at the Novel House Office in Alausa Ikeja and is rooted in the aim of enhancing the psychosocial well-being of the state’s populace.

The program’s initiation follows a troubling surge in instances of sexual and gender-based violence, as indicated by statistical research conducted by the agency.
Adeniyi explained that the support and healing group sessions are designed to offer psychoeducation to offenders, aiding them in better managing their emotions when faced with triggering situations.
Furthermore, Adeniyi disclosed that additional research has revealed that many of these perpetrators were themselves victims of childhood traumas.
As such, there is a significant need to facilitate healing from these past traumas that could be contributing to their abusive behaviors in adulthood.

She emphasized that these sessions are intended to hold perpetrators accountable, urging them to take responsibility for their actions instead of shifting blame onto their victims.
The program also focuses on assisting perpetrators in unlearning unhealthy coping mechanisms that have historically led to violent behavior.
The aim is to equip them with healthier coping strategies to manage anger, improve communication skills, and cultivate peaceful and harmonious relationships.
The initiative commenced on June 10 and concluded on August 9, involving weekly sessions conducted over an eight-week period. Participants expressed gratitude to the Lagos State Government for offering these sessions.
Adeniyi reassured that the program will continue, especially for survivors who wish to remain in their relationships but seek to end the cycle of abuse.
