How Men In Army Uniform Robbed, Killed My Aide – Senator Adeola

Solomon Adeola1

Senator Solomon Adeola, who chairs the Senate Committee on Appropriations, has alleged that soldiers from the Nigerian Army operating checkpoints around the Ikeja area of Lagos State were responsible for the killing of his senior aide, Mr. Adeniyi Oluwatosin Sanni, on the early morning of Saturday, August 5, 2023.

Initially, Senator Adeola had stated that the information available to him indicated that Mr. Sanni was stopped at a checkpoint around the Ojodu-Berger area of Lagos while he was on his way home to Isheri. “Security agents” requested the documents for the car he was driving, which he received from his wife via WhatsApp.

Subsequently, Mr. Sanni’s wife called him, and he informed her that soldiers were still checking his vehicle’s papers. Tragically, it was the last communication they had, and Mr. Sanni’s body, riddled with bullets, was later discovered near the Toyota Bus Stop area of Oshodi, close to a military barrack.

In an update on the investigation of the murder and armed robbery, as reported by the Nigerian Police Force in a statement from Abuja, Senator Adeola expressed his belief that his aide was killed by a group of soldiers working under the newly deployed Commander of 9 Brigade, Ikeja Cantonment of the Nigeria Army, Brigadier General Nsikan John Edet. These soldiers were allegedly conducting checkpoints and targeting lone occupants of cars for robbery.

Senator Adeola, in the statement he personally issued, shared information he had gathered from top police sources involved in the investigation. He mentioned that a similar brutal killing and armed robbery took place around the same Ojodu-Berger area on the late night of August 17, 2023, resulting in the death of another Nigerian whose body was discovered around Iyana-Ipaja after being taken away by soldiers from a checkpoint.

According to the senator’s account, the soldiers were unaware that the occupant of the car they killed and whose car they took away was the second vehicle in a two-car convoy heading to the same destination. The first car passed through the soldiers’ checkpoint, but the second car was stopped for vehicle document inspection. After a while, the occupant of the first car (whose name is withheld) realized that the second car was missing. He called his colleague in the second car, who informed him that he was being taken to Iyana Ipaja by the soldiers at the checkpoint. Sadly, that was the last communication before the second car’s occupant was found dead, dumped on the road.

Senator Adeola called upon the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, to ensure that those responsible for the killing of his aide are identified and brought to justice. He highlighted a pattern of similar incidents involving soldiers conducting late-night checkpoints around Ikeja. He expressed that the Nigerian Army should not be seen as condoning or sheltering rogue elements involved in robbing and killing innocent Nigerians.

As of now, Mr. Sanni’s black Toyota Camry, his phones, and other belongings have yet to be recovered.
