Army Reveals Bandits New Tactics

The Nigerian Army has raised concerns about bandits and various criminal groups operating in the North West and North Central regions of the country adopting tactics similar to those employed by terrorists, leading to increased disruptions.

This concern is particularly evident in their utilization of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), a tactic designed to instill fear among law-abiding citizens. The Nigerian Army remains resolute in countering these tactics, regardless of the perpetrators’ efforts.

During a meeting at Army Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, emphasized these challenges while hosting Vladimir Voronkov, the Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Office for Counter-Terrorism.

He expressed the Army’s readiness to collaborate with the United Nations to restore peace in the troubled regions, highlighting the use of both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches to defeat the adversaries.

The Army Chief specifically sought the UN’s support and cooperation, particularly in implementing deradicalization programs for repentant terrorists.

In response, Vladimir Voronkov, the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism, pledged the organization’s commitment to enhancing Nigeria’s capacity to detect, investigate, and prosecute terrorism-related offenses.
