The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reached an agreement with Jose Santos Peseiro for him to continue in his role as Head Coach of the Senior Men’s National Team of Nigeria, the Super Eagles.

According to the terms of the original contract, which was drawn up in May 2022, the Portuguese coach has been tasked with leading the Super Eagles to at least the semi-finals of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations finals scheduled to take place in Cote d’Ivoire in the coming months.

Peseiro has successfully guided the Super Eagles through the qualifiers, securing a ticket with a match to spare, including an impressive 10-0 victory against Sao Tome and Principe in Agadir, Morocco, in June 2022.

In the new agreement, Peseiro has accepted a reduction in his previous terms while retaining his position as the head coach of the Super Eagles B, responsible for the home-based professionals who compete in the biennial African Nations Championship.

Additionally, Peseiro has invited a squad of players, including on-field captain William Ekong, defenders Tyronne Ebuehi and Semi Ajayi, midfielders Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka, and forwards Moses Simon, Victor Osimhen, and Taiwo Awoniyi, among others, for the final qualification series match against Sao Tome and Principe, scheduled to take place in Uyo.

Despite already securing a place in the finals with 12 points from their previous five matches, Nigeria needs to earn at least one point in this match to ensure they top the group ahead of second-placed Guinea Bissau, who have 10 points and will play against Sierra Leone in Bissau.

Peseiro’s squad selection for this match includes the first-time inclusion of Belgium-based centre-back Jordan Torunarigha and forwards Victor Boniface and Gift Orban. There are also recalls for Portugal-based left-back Bruno Onyemaechi and defensive midfielder Raphael Onyedika.
