Reps Reacts To NLC’s Claim Of N100m Palliative For Lawmakers

The House of Representatives has refuted a statement attributed to Christopher Onyeka, the National Assistant General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), claiming that each member received N100 million as palliative.

Akin Rotimi, Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Public Affairs, addressed this in a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja.

Rotimi stated that Onyeka’s assertion lacked any factual basis and was unfounded. He emphasized that transparency and truthfulness in public discourse are crucial for a well-functioning democracy.

He expressed skepticism regarding whether Onyeka was representing the official stance of the NLC on the matter, but noted the importance of rectifying such misinformation.

“We want to make it clear that Mr. Onyeka’s claim that National Assembly members were given N100 million as palliatives is false. At no point did members receive any money from the executive arm as palliatives,” Rotimi affirmed.

He further stated that the allegation should be regarded as malicious, irresponsible, and made in bad faith.

Rotimi expressed disappointment that Onyeka would distort facts to support the legitimate demands of the NLC while attempting to discredit the National Assembly and incite the public against the institution.

The House of Representatives has called for an immediate retraction of this false statement and a public apology from the NLC.

Rotimi reminded the NLC and all Nigerians that within the first 100 days of the 10th Assembly’s tenure, they demonstrated a commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers and citizens. He mentioned that the House promptly took the necessary legislative steps to approve funds for palliatives, among other measures.

He also emphasized that the House consistently advocated for the swift implementation of palliative measures to effectively reach vulnerable Nigerians. Additionally, they supported the call for a prompt review of the minimum wage and encouraged the NLC to view the National Assembly as partners rather than adversaries.

Rotimi assured that the House remains dedicated to promoting the well-being of Nigerians, expressing empathy for the challenges faced due to the removal of the fuel subsidy.
