BREAKING: What Happened To Lalong Hours Ago In Abuja
The Court of Appeal in Abuja has invalidated the participation of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its senatorial candidate, Napoleon Bali, in the February 25 National Assembly Election for Plateau South Senatorial District.

In the verdict, a three-member panel led by Justice Elfreda Williams-Dawodu ruled that the votes cast for PDP in the election were deemed unlawful and wasted. Consequently, the former Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong, running on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform, was declared the Senator for the Plateau South Senatorial District.
Justice Williams-Dawodu emphasized that the PDP and its candidate had no legal standing to participate in the election, as they failed to adhere to the judgment of a Plateau High Court which ordered the party to conduct proper elections for the selection of officers at the Ward, Local Government, and State Council levels. This directive was not followed by the PDP.
The Court of Appeal pointed out that the PDP’s disregard for a clear lawful court order was a serious matter, as the party hastily established an illegal caretaker committee, directly opposing the court’s decision.
In particular, the appellate court stated that the PDP did not field any candidate for the Plateau South Senatorial District, as it was not eligible to contest any election as of February 25, 2023.
Consequently, the Court of Appeal upheld the declaration of Lalong as the legitimate Senator for Plateau South Senatorial District, based on his second-highest vote count in the election.
Other Justices of the Court of Appeal who concurred with the judgment were Mohammed Mustapha and Okon Abang.
Lalong, who previously served as the Governor of Plateau State, currently holds the position of Minister of Labour in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
