Previously, the Supreme Court had overturned the decision of the Court of Appeal that nullified the governor’s election, which he won under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The PDP candidate in the March governorship election had appealed the ruling of the Court of Appeal that removed him from office, asserting that he was not sponsored by the PDP.

In November, the appeal court unanimously ruled in favor of Nentawe Yilwada of the All Progressives Congress (APC), stating that he won the March 18, 2023 governorship election.

Dissatisfied with the verdict, Governor Mutfwang approached the Supreme Court, where Justice Emmanuel Agim delivered the judgment on Friday.

Justice Agim clarified that the order of the High Court pertained to the party’s authority to conduct primaries for the PDP and not the nomination of Governor Mutfwang as its candidate.

Despite this, the justice noted that there was evidence indicating compliance with the order by the party.

During an appearance on Channels TV’s Politics Today, Governor Mutfwang expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for not interfering with the Supreme Court’s decision, despite their membership in the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Mutfwang praised the justices for ruling in accordance with their conscience and the law, stating, “He allowed their lordships to do their work, and they did it according to the dictates of their conscience and the law. I am proud of that.”
