Northern Governors Gain Insight Into Insecurity After US Trip
Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State has stated that he and his counterparts from nine other northern states now have a clearer understanding of the security challenges in the region following their recent trip to the United States. The summit, attended by governors from Jigawa, Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Niger, Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, and Plateau, provided a platform to discuss critical issues affecting the region. Despite facing criticism for holding the summit abroad, Governor Radda defended the initiative, emphasizing that it was organized by USIP, not the northern governors.
During the three-day symposium in Washington D.C., the governors engaged in discussions with stakeholders and exchanged ideas to address the root causes of insecurity, including banditry and kidnapping. Governor Radda emphasized the importance of collaboration in finding lasting solutions to the security challenges facing their states.
Addressing criticism that the summit should have been held in Nigeria, Governor Radda clarified that the initiative was at the behest of USIP, which hosted the event and invited the participating governors.
In recent years, the northern region of Nigeria has grappled with various security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of violence. Governor Radda dismissed claims of political motives behind the insecurity, attributing it instead to issues of injustice and poverty.
As the northern governors return from their US trip, the hope is that the insights gained will contribute to efforts to restore peace and security in the region, addressing the concerns of residents affected by the ongoing insecurity.
