Cybernetics, the study of information transmission in machines and electronic systems, compared to the human brain and nervous system, has found a groundbreaking trailblazer in Ekeng-Itua.

Leading the forefront of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) initiatives in Africa, Ekeng-Itua’s journey exemplifies dedication, innovation, and resilience. As an educator, administrator, and engineer, she has been instrumental in fostering opportunities for African youth, particularly girls, in STEM fields.

Her groundbreaking achievement was realized at the University of Reading in the UK under the mentorship of Professor Kevin Warwick, the world’s first human cyborg.

With over two decades of expertise in engineering and STEM education, Ekeng-Itua’s influence spans across continents, from the USA and Europe to Africa, where she has spearheaded pioneering STEM programs.

Despite societal norms discouraging girls from pursuing scientific disciplines, Ekeng-Itua’s passion for unraveling the intricacies of technology and fostering innovation remained unyielding. She pursued her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Mobile and Satellite Communications Engineering, respectively, driven by her relentless pursuit of knowledge.

Her journey was not without challenges. As a woman of color in a predominantly male-dominated field, Ekeng-Itua encountered gender biases and a lack of role models. However, her determination to surpass limitations propelled her to historic heights, culminating in the completion of her doctorate in Cybernetics.
