The Nigerian military has reopened the popular Banex Plaza in the Wuse 2 area of Abuja for business after it had been under siege for over a week. The plaza resumed operations around 2:30 pm on Monday, according to Daily Trust.

The market was sealed by military authorities on May 18 following a violent clash between traders and military personnel. The altercation reportedly began when thugs assaulted some soldiers who had a disagreement with a trader at the plaza. The trader was alleged to have sold a defective phone, prompting the buyer to call in soldiers.

The police initially intervened to resolve the conflict, but the situation escalated when soldiers returned to the plaza, leading to its immediate shutdown.

The military’s action sparked widespread condemnation from human rights activists, including Femi Falana (SAN), and various civil society organizations. They criticized the military’s heavy-handed approach and the impact on traders’ livelihoods.
