Breaking: House Of Representatives Plans To Translate Textbooks Into Major Local Nigerian-Languages (Details)

The House of Representatives announced plans to translate basic science textbooks into major Nigerian languages. This initiative was disclosed by Abubakar Hassan Fulata, Chairman of the House Committee on University Education, during a meeting with a delegation from the German parliament on Monday.

The German delegation, led by Kai Gehring, Chairman of the Committee on Education Research and Technical Assessment, visited to inform the Nigerian parliament about German scholarship programs for West African students, particularly Nigerians. Gehring highlighted that by 2025, selected Nigerian students would join the 4,000 already studying in Germany.

Fulata expressed gratitude to Gehring, the German parliament, and the German government for their ongoing support and partnership with Nigeria. He acknowledged the long-standing relationship between the two countries, noting that many projects in Nigeria were executed by the German company Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.

Fulata revealed that a key agenda for his committee is to translate basic science textbooks into approximately 10 major Nigerian languages. He emphasized the educational benefits of learning in one’s mother tongue, stating, “We have about 250 ethnic groups and languages in Nigeria. What we are seeking is to have basic science textbooks translated into about 10 major Nigerian languages. I was once a lecturer and I know if students learn sciences in their mother tongue, there will be serious improvement in our educational system.”

He also encouraged the German government to establish a German language center in Nigeria, similar to the existing French and Arabic language centers, to further cultural and educational exchange between the two nations.
