Police Safely Disarm Explosive Device Near Borno Healthcare-Center, No Casualties Reported
Late Friday night, the police anti-bomb squad successfully deactivated an improvised explosive device (IED) that had been planted near a primary healthcare center in Maiduguri metropolis.
Residents discovered the IED near Mala Kachalla General Hospital at the federal low-cost area along Baga Road around midnight. Thanks to the timely discovery, the device did not detonate.
An eyewitness reported, “We found the bomb near Mala Hospital around midnight. We immediately contacted the police anti-bomb squad, who arrived at the scene but were only able to deactivate the device by around 3 am.”
The origin of the IED remains unknown.
This incident follows the recent discovery of another IED at Zajeri Primary School on Baga Road and comes just a month after explosions in Gwoza town claimed thirty-six lives. Additionally, the military has raised concerns about the increasing use of IEDs by Boko Haram terrorists to cause disruption.
Brig. Gen. Abubakar Haruna, Acting GOC 7Div Maimalari Cantonment, emphasized that the military is ramping up awareness campaigns about IED threats in Maiduguri and Jere. He urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious objects to the authorities, highlighting that terrorists favor IEDs due to their effectiveness and ease of use.
