Anyaoku and Prominent Nigerians Urge Tinubu to Draft New Constitution for a Better Nigeria

The Patriots, led by Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Secretary General of the Commonwealth, have called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to initiate the process of creating a new constitution for Nigeria.

The group highlighted the urgent need for a new constitution, stating that the current one lacks the capacity to guide the country towards progress. They believe the existing constitution is a significant factor in the challenges Nigeria faces today.

After meeting with President Tinubu at the State House on Friday, the group addressed the press, emphasizing the importance of this constitutional change. Among the notable figures present were Senator Shehu Sani, human rights lawyer Mike Ozekhome, former Minister Labaran Maku, Senator Ben Obi, and former Governor Segun Osoba.

The Patriots urged President Tinubu to promptly send a presidential bill to the National Assembly, advocating for the establishment of a constituent assembly. This assembly would be tasked with drafting a new constitution that reflects the diversity of the Nigerian populace. The proposed draft constitution should then be subjected to a national referendum, allowing the citizens to have a say in the creation of a constitution that could address the country’s numerous challenges.

The group expressed confidence that the new constitution could be drafted within nine months, marking a crucial step towards resolving the issues plaguing Nigeria.
