Nigerians Furious Over Alleged Election Denial of Peter Obi, Says Lloyd Ukwu
Dr. Lloyd Ukwu, president of NADECO-USA, the American chapter of the National Democratic Coalition, has shed light on the varied reactions across Nigeria to the recent political turmoil. According to a report by Vanguard, Ukwu highlighted the distinct responses between the South-South and South-East regions.
In the South-South, despite attempts by a few compromised militants to deter participation, the general population actively engaged in the protests. This stands in contrast to the South-East, where Igbo leaders and traders have collectively decided to refrain from participating in the demonstrations.
Many Nigerians perceive these protests as a symbolic challenge to the treatment of the Igbo people. The anger stems from the widespread belief that Peter Obi, an Igbo presidential candidate, was unjustly denied victory in the election.
Ukwu pointed out the irony in the situation, noting that while many are frustrated by the alleged injustice against Peter Obi, the Igbo community seems more focused on safeguarding their businesses rather than fighting for their freedom and rights. He emphasized that this approach might hinder their collective empowerment.
“The Igbo leadership and traders are in agreement to stay away and are calling for non-participation,” Ukwu remarked. “In contrast, in the South-South, it’s only a few compromised militants discouraging protests, while the population is eager to participate, and they did. The irony here is that most Nigerians are angry because they feel Peter Obi was denied the election, believing he won because he is Igbo. Yet, the Igbo man prefers to protect his business over his freedom and liberty.”
This growing discontent highlights the complex dynamics of regional and ethnic politics in Nigeria, with the Igbo community finding itself at a crossroads between economic security and the pursuit of justice.
