Governor Bala Mohammed’s Political Missteps: A Distraction from Bauchi’s Challenges
Governor Bala Mohammed’s recent criticisms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reveal more about his political ambitions than genuine concern for Nigeria’s future. His attack is a clear attempt to advance his 2027 presidential aspirations by exploiting the current national protests, rather than contributing positively to the nation’s recovery.
Instead of joining forces with leaders who are striving to restore stability, Governor Mohammed is injecting his divisive agenda into the public discourse, sowing seeds of discord at a time when unity is crucial. Despite increased federal allocations to Bauchi State, resulting from President Tinubu’s economic policies, Governor Mohammed has failed to provide the leadership needed to support national progress. Instead, he seems determined to undermine the government for his own political gain.
The people of Bauchi State, and Nigerians at large, should question Governor Mohammed’s use of the substantial funds he receives monthly from the federal account. His recent outburst appears to be an attempt to deflect attention from his shortcomings as governor. In 2023, he himself acknowledged Bauchi State’s distressing status as having the highest number of out-of-school children in the country. According to the MICS 2021 survey, over half a million children in Bauchi are out of school.
A governor grappling with such challenges should be focusing on solutions rather than casting blame on President Tinubu’s administration, which is committed to reversing decades of neglect that leaders like Mohammed have failed to address. The economic reforms initiated by President Tinubu, though challenging in the short term, are vital for Nigeria’s long-term prosperity. Governor Mohammed’s criticisms ignore these efforts, opting instead to spread a narrative of despair, which is both misleading and irresponsible.
At a time when Nigeria needs unity, Governor Mohammed’s rhetoric risks deepening divisions. President Tinubu has consistently worked towards national cohesion, bringing together diverse groups to pursue common goals. Governor Mohammed’s attempts to stir regional and ethnic tensions are a cynical tactic that Nigerians must reject. The country’s progress hinges on leaders who prioritize unity, and President Tinubu has shown himself to be such a leader.
In conclusion, Governor Bala Mohammed’s attack on President Tinubu is a regrettable display of political maneuvering. It’s time for Nigerian leaders, including Governor Mohammed, to shift from destructive criticism to constructive engagement. Nigeria’s challenges require a collective effort, and President Tinubu has demonstrated his willingness to engage, reform, and lead. Nigerians deserve leaders who will rise to the occasion, not those who drag the nation into unnecessary conflict.
