The term “a new Edo” represents a period of transformation and progress for Edo State—a time of positive change in governance, infrastructure, and overall development, all aimed at improving the lives of the people and creating a more prosperous future.

However, since the exit of Adams Aliyu Oshiomhole, the state has experienced limited progress in crucial areas such as entrepreneurship, nightlife, education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Even the moral fabric of the society has frayed. It is evident that Edo is in desperate need of revitalization and fresh leadership.

Despite Governor Godwin Obaseki introducing several initiatives—some of which had potential—he failed to adequately meet the basic needs of the people during his eight years in office, resulting in widespread dissatisfaction. Nevertheless, this discontent alone doesn’t guarantee a sweeping loss for Obaseki in the election, as voters often cast their ballots based on emotions and sentiment rather than strictly performance.

While Obaseki’s significant shortcomings cannot be ignored, they do not automatically translate into an assured victory for the opposition. The Labour Party, for instance, won the presidential election in Edo just last year. However, this success didn’t carry over to the gubernatorial race, where Olumide Akpata was not considered a strong contender.

The explanation is simple: all politics is local. Voters prioritize local issues and personal connections, which means the dynamics of a gubernatorial election can vary greatly from a national one. Community needs, candidate familiarity, and local sentiments often play critical roles, sometimes leading to surprising outcomes.

Take the case of the APC. The party has faced significant challenges, particularly given the current economic conditions—part of a broader global crisis. The removal of the fuel subsidy has exacerbated the situation, and more difficult times are on the horizon. While these issues could have worked against the APC, the outcome of elections isn’t always predictable. Hard work remains the key to success, and in this case, the hard work of one man—Adams Oshiomhole—stood out.

Consider Edo South, a region that holds a significant share of the votes. It was expected that Olumide Akpata, a native of the region, would greatly impact the race and divide PDP’s votes. But this prediction turned out to be far from reality.

Oshiomhole’s influence, combined with the unity of APC leaders in Edo South against Obaseki and the PDP, created a powerful alliance. Oshiomhole campaigned side by side with Senator Monday Okpebholo in Edo South markets, and the loyalty of market women to Oshiomhole was undeniable. The excitement and affection he generated whenever he visited the markets or walked through the streets of Benin were unmistakable. His presence commanded respect and admiration.

At every campaign stop, Oshiomhole proudly showcased his achievements from his tenure as governor. His projects, scattered across all 192 wards of the state, served as a testament to his impactful leadership. When a leader has delivered so effectively, what better endorsement could there be for another?

A New Edo Under Senator Monday Okpebholo

Under the leadership of Senator Monday Okpebholo, the promise of a “new Edo” will be more than a political catchphrase. It will signify a comprehensive transformation across every sector of the state. Okpebholo envisions a future driven by sustainable development, social welfare, and governance that prioritizes the needs of Edo’s citizens. His administration will focus on key areas such as:

Economic Empowerment: Supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses to create jobs and reduce unemployment.

Infrastructural Development: Upgrading roads, healthcare facilities, and educational institutions to better serve the people.

Agricultural Revitalization: Reviving the agricultural sector to ensure food security and rural prosperity through modern farming techniques and financial incentives for farmers.
